Medical Colleges Directed to Bolster Security After Kolkata Doctor’s Death: NMC Notice
The National Medical Commission (NMC), the country’s top authority for medical education, has issued a directive to all medical colleges and institutions, emphasizing the need to ensure a secure working environment. The NMC has recommended measures such as installing CCTV cameras in sensitive areas and maintaining an adequate presence of security personnel.
This notice follows widespread protests by doctors in response to the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.
The NMC’s notice states: “All medical colleges are urged to establish a comprehensive policy to ensure a safe working environment within both the college and hospital premises for all staff, including faculty members, medical students, and resident doctors. This policy should guarantee adequate safety measures in OPDs, wards, emergency areas, hostels, and other open spaces across the campus, as well as in residential quarters.”
The notice also underscores the importance of well-lit corridors and pathways during the evening to ensure staff can move safely around the campus. Additionally, the NMC advises installing CCTV cameras and ensuring sufficient security coverage.
The notice further instructs that any incidents of violence against medical students or staff should be promptly investigated by the college administration, with FIRs filed with the police as necessary.
